All of Us Strangers

2023 R Fantasy/Romance 1h 45m

All of Us Strangers is well-acted and is interesting on paper, but it is slow-paced.

Adam (Andrew Scott) is working on a screenplay set in the 1980s, when his parents died in a car accident. He lives in a large apartment building in London that only has one other tenant, Harry. Harry and Adam become aware of each other following a fire alarm in their building and begin dating soon after. To help with his screenplay, Adam goes back to his childhood home. There, he discovers his parents. His parents who died in 1987! They remain the age they were when they died. He gets to know them as an adult and he fills them in on how his life has unfolded. He is a writer. They are proud. He is gay. They are worried about that. It’s an interesting dynamic to see how a 2023 man comes out to 1987 parents and how they come to accept it. There are many interesting scenes in the movie, but to share more would be "spoilers."

While watching the movie it can be challenging to determine what is really happening, what is a dream, and what is in Adam’s mind. I don't mean that as a negative. I think that's actually a draw for the movie; it's fodder for conversation afterward. Andrew Scott does a nice job in the lead. There are some nice moments in the movie. It's well-written. My biggest reservation preventing me from recommending the movie is that it is slow.
