Anyone But You

R 2023 Comedy/Romance 1h 43m

If you are familiar with Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” you know you have always wondered what the story would be like if retold with a beach bod cast, a smidge of nudity and prolific swearing. Well, buy a lotto ticket because you are in luck.

Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) had a one night stand that ended with them each resenting the other. Fast forward six months and they are both obligated to attend a destination wedding together. Will they fall in love? Will their dislike for each other ruin the wedding? I’ll let you guess.

For the most part, Anyone But You follows the romantic comedy formula well. In fact, the parts where it leans in to its Shakespeare inspiration work the best. The movie gets an R rating because of a couple brief topless scenes and a lot of f@#$’s. The swearing and nudity didn’t do anything to make the movie better and prevent the movie from being “cute.” It’s a pleasant but not laugh-out-loud movie; being a cute but not too sweet PG-13 movie would have been a better outcome. That movie is still in there, but there’s some gratuitous nudity and swearing thrown in that prevent me from giving it a blanket “recommend.”

Sydney Sweeney is an attractive woman and could make a good romantic lead, but this role wasn’t right for her. Her natural speech pattern is slow like she has a mild buzz happening. That delivery is ill-suited for a role that should be a quick wit. I give Sweeney the “Keanu Reeves in Kenneth Branaugh’s Much Ado About Nothing” Award.

Don’t waste your money seeing this in the theater but go ahead and throw it on your streaming queue.
