PG-13 2024 Action 2h 19m
After months of seeing trailers for Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa dancing to David Bowie, I succumbed to the marketing that had been drilled into me and I saw Argylle. As I expected, it was not a great movie. It’s over-the-top, it’s campy, and not the slightest bit realistic. However, it was a fun popcorn romp. The writing isn’t great but it does try to pull off a lot of twists. Some twists land and some are predictable but I give them credit for trying.
Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) is a spy novelist who becomes the target of real spies because her novels accurately predict events occurring in the real world. Aiden (Sam Rockwell) is a “good spy" out to protect her from the evil Directorate. Bryan Cranston plays Director Ritter, the head of the Directorate and a sinister bad guy; Cranston appears to relish playing a less grounded bad guy. Rockwell, Cranston, and other cast members do a nice job in their roles. I like Howard but I think she was miscast in this role. While watching the movie, I was thinking that Sarah Chalke might have been a better fit.
If you are in the mood for a little fun where you don’t have to use your brain too much, you could do worse than Argylle.
