Let me just say I’m sick of “gore porn” movies that are violent for violence sake. This is one of those movies. If that’s your thing, I’ll say this one has some things going for it. The fight choreography is okay and there is some humor throughout, but so much gore that I felt dirty watching it. Imagine Shamu splashing the first few rows at SeaWorld with blood instead of water — and you feel guilty for being at SeaWorld in the first place.
Like 2023’s Silent Night, the protagonist of this blood fest is mute. However, the “hero” of Boy Kills World has an inner monologue that the audience can hear. Boy (Bill Skarsgård, Pennywise in It, a far less gory movie) has chosen his inner voice to sound like the narrator of a Street Fighter-type video game he played as a kid. The voiceover actor is H. Jon Benjamin (TV’s “Archer” and “Bob’s Burger”) which helps deliver the movie’s humor.
We first encounter Boy as a child being relentlessly drilled by Shaman in a training montage that shows the boy grow from a boy to a young man. Via flashbacks, we see that Boy’s mother and sister are bother killed in front of him by members of the aristocratic Van Der Koy family who kill citizens each year as part of an annual Culling. His training is building up to his ultimate goal of avenging his family. I won’t say if he does or doesn’t, but I will again reiterate that his attempt leads to bloodshed. Notable actors of the Van Der Koy include Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley of Downton Abbey) and Fame Janssen (X-Men). Dockery’s role is a far cry from Downton Abbey but she seems to enjoy chewing the scenery. It looks like Janssen spent the pandemic getting plastic surgery; she is almost unrecognizable and it’s a little distracting.
