Challengers

R 2024 Sport/Romance 2h 11m

Challengers is a love triangle set against the backdrop of competitive tennis. Promising. In execution, this movie is a stinker. Despite some interesting tennis sequences, the movie fails because none of the three people in the love triangle have any redeeming qualities. I couldn’t root for any of the players to succeed in love, or on their own.  Do not waste your time or money on this movie in the theater or streaming. If you do decide to watch it, stream it so you are able to multitask while watching it so your time isn’t completely wasted.

Still reading? Fine. Zendaya plays an up-and-coming young tennis player who encounters two, male best friends/tennis players who are both enamored by her. Over more than a decade, the movie charts the on-again/off-again relationships between the three. They all manage to back-stab and fight with each other. The drama isn’t engaging and is pretty dull. The director tries to compensate by turning up a heavy bass dance soundtrack during many of the conversational scenes. I don’t know what ending of the movie would have satisfied me, but I can say the one that they chose wasn’t it; it wasn’t believable, it was confusing and seemed like a joke.
