Nicolas Cage’s filmography is all over the board from very good movies to very bad movies. I’m happy to report Dream Scenario falls on the good side of that ledger. In this he plays a truly unremarkable and forgettable professor, author and family man who, for unknown reasons, begins to appear in people’s dreams. A lot of people’s dreams. Even people he has never met. This leads to instant celebrity and he begins to lose control of his own life as he is praised and/or blamed for what “he” is doing in dreams.
It’s an interesting premise that executed pretty well. I am unfamiliar with any of writer/director Kristoffer Borgli’s previous work but I look forward to seeing what he does in the future. He gets a good performance out of Cage; Cage gets to go through swatch of emotions but avoids going over the top as he is prone to do in some films. To my knowledge Charlie Kaufman has no connection to this piece, but it seems like it could be a cousin to some of his works like Being John Malkovich or Adaptation. The story and Nicholas Cage brings just the right amount of trippy.
I had a good time at the movie. I didn’t know where it was going to take me. The audience I watched with and I laughed out loud multiple times. The cast was good across the board and featured some players I am always happy to see e.g., Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, and Dylan Baker. I recommend it, but you could probably wait to stream it.
