PG-13 2024 Sci-fi/Adventure 2h 46m
I thought Dune: Part One was as dull as sand. It felt like all exposition and world-building with little meat to hold my interest. I wanted to see if Dune: Part Two would deliver a pay-off for having sat through the first one. Did it succeed? I’ll say “mostly.”
There is still a lot of world-building going on. It is long. But there is a lot more action than there was in Part One. I haven’t read any of the Dune books, so the mythology being laid out was a bit confusing and dense. Dune also evoked the same "name-nesia" I had when watched “Game of Thrones”-- despite having seen every episode, I couldn’t tell you anyone’s names. I have seen both Dune movies and would have to Google the character names to include them here accurately. Warning: I didn’t.
So, what’s Dune: Part Two about? Wonka (Timothée Chalamet) is a rebel who may be the messiah prophesied to lead an uprising. He is joined by Spider-Man’s girlfriend (Zendaya) who helps teach him the ways of her desert people. They ride giant worms for mass transit. They fight bad guys like Bald Elvis (Austin Butler) and Emperor Christopher Walken (playing himself). If you’ve seen the original Star Wars trilogy, you'll be able to follow the broad strokes of the story of a chosen one rising to rebel against the Emperor.
Dune: Part Two provided enough intrigue that I will see the inevitable Part Three.
