R 2023 Comedy/Adventure 1h 32m
I had low expectations for Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain. It bypassed theaters and was released directly on Peacock. It stars three guys from Saturday Night Live who aren’t even in the cast; they just have a short, usually odd video most weeks. I mostly find those videos funny, but didn’t know how their humor would translate to a full-length film. It turns out, better than I thought.
Foggy Mountain is not a great movie. In fact, it’s pretty stupid, but in a great way. John, Martin and Ben, friends since childhood, are in their late twenties and are cartoonish man-children who live together and all work at Ben’s father’s sporting goods store. They don’t always get along, but you can tell they love each other like brothers. Tonally, I think Foggy Mountain taps into a throwback era of comedy with a silly/funny vibe akin to Strange Brew. I smiled throughout the entire movie and laughed out loud more times than I could count.
The three leads are able to carry the story together even though you may not be able to say which is Ben, which is John or which one is Martin by movie’s end. Conan O’Brien is well cast as Ben’s father. John Goodman does a nice job narrating. Here’s where I may lose some credibility with you: I think The Treasure of Foggy Mountain is the funniest movie I’ve seen in 2023. Feel free to disagree and tell me your favorite.
