PG 2023 Drama 1h 52m
Based on the book “Mustang Miracle”, The Long Game is the origin story of the San Felipe High School Mustangs’ golf team. JB Peña (Jay Hernandez, “Magnum”) is the school district’s new superintendent and is new to town. He is excited to join the town’s exclusive golf club but is turned away because he is Mexican. As a bit of an F you to the entitled, white, country club set, JB recruits some of his Mexican-American students who caddy at the club to become the high school’s golf team. JB enlists his war buddy and fellow golf enthusiast, Frank (Dennis Quaid) to help him coach the team. Together, the team all learn some important life lessons.
If you have seen the trailer for the movie, you have a pretty good idea of the story. The movie doesn’t provide a lot of surprises and, I’d argue, it doesn’t have to. Instead, it does its job by delivering a well-executed, feel-good drama. It’s not perfect. The white, country club set are perhaps a bit two-dimensional as snobby racists, but they are easy to root against. Cheech Marin plays the wise groundskeeper who dispenses advice and comic relief; he could have been given more depth. These are nitpicks. Overall, this was an enjoyable time at the movies. My guess is it will be out of the theaters soon, but give it a go when it comes to streaming.
