PG-13 2023 Action 1h 45m
This is the 87th movie in the Marvel series. Not really, but I have seen all of them and it sort of feels that way. Some I loved and some I just hated. (I’m looking at you The Eternals.) There is also a large chunk of them that fall in the middle. Ones that I had fun watching but I don’t feel the need to rewatch. This one falls into that camp. It is not a great movie, but I enjoyed it and that’s my barometer for most superhero movies. If you like superhero movies in general, you’ll like this one. If you don’t, this one isn’t going to be the one to win you over.
Would someone have to have seen every Marvel movie and show prior to seeing The Marvels? No, I think it could still be enjoyed and followed without having to watch previous outings. If you were so inclined, the basic assignments would be the movie Captain Marvel and the Disney+ shows “Ms. Marvel” and “WandaVision.” Those three properties would give you all the background you would need to know the three heroes in this movie: Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau — collectively known as The Marvels.
In the movie our heroes get their “light based powers” “entangled” so that when one of the three of them uses their powers, they switch places. This premise brings the three characters together and sets up some comedic moments. The logic for how/why this entanglement works is briefly explained but like much of this movie, it’s better to just sit back and think “if you say so” then to note all the leaps in logic and plausibility. If you can do that, then you should be able to enjoy this as a decent popcorn flick.
Marvel fans will want to know if there are credit scenes. There is no end credit scene, but there is a juicy one mid-credits that could bring interesting things in the future.
