It was a nice sunny day to see a movie about bad weather. Twisters is a companion movie to 1996’s Twister. It is a standalone movie potentially set in the same universe but not a sequel, remake, or reboot. So, you needn't have seen Twister to get what’s happening in this movie. Also, you don’t need to have read a book or know anything about anything to get what’s going on in Twisters; if you don’t understand science, you might even enjoy Twisters more!
If you saw and liked Twister, you will like Twisters; it’s not the same movie but it’s the same flavor. There are teams of storm chasers. There are scientific terms thrown about. I think they are real words, but I don’t think much of it is real science. How things would work in real life may or may not influence how they work in Oklahoma during “a once-in-a-generation” series of storms. If you are a jerk or don’t listen to our heroes' instructions, you are far more likely to get sucked up in a funnel cloud. If you can find a series of pipes to hold on to, you're likely to be fine. Although people die in the movie, there isn’t any gore if that’s a trigger for you.
Glen Powell plays a charming, celebrity, cowboy storm chaser with a YouTube following and a merch table. Is he a jerk or does he have a heart of gold? Daisy Edgar-Jones plays a meteorologist who got too close to a storm in the past and it cost her dearly; now she’s being pulled back into the world of chasing. Could these two people possibly end up partnering in storm chasing or in love? Yes, on both counts. Technically, that’s a spoiler but only slightly more than me saying there are tornadoes in the movie.
Bottom line: Twisters is a dumb-fun time at the movies. You’ll roll your eyes at parts of it. You’ll shake your head at parts of it. But you’ll also likely smile and enjoy yourself. Powell and Edgar-Jones have good chemistry together and do their best with their roles. There are nice special effects so it’s probably worth seeing this one in the theater.
